Why does PACE matter for Bullitt families?
PACE, the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, takes over medical care, therapy, personal care, meals and social services for people 55 and older who need nursing-facility level of care but can live safely at home with support. It is the most comprehensive at-home option Kentucky Medicaid offers, and it does not have the HCB waiver's waiting list in the same way.
DMS's list of enrolled PACE organizations, updated December 9, 2024, shows Care Guide Partners PACE serving Bullitt County along with Grayson, Hardin, Hart, Larue and Nelson counties, at (270) 600-2580. Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Henry and Trimble had none listed. Jefferson County has two PACE organizations. Families should confirm the current service area by ZIP code with the PACE organization.
Why is the personal care home important?
Colonial House I in Shepherdsville is one of only five freestanding personal care homes in the seven KIPDA counties. Personal care homes are the residential setting where Kentucky's State Supplementation Program can help pay for an SSI-level resident, under a base standard of need of $1,409 a month before cost-of-living increases since 2021. Assisted living communities cannot receive State Supplementation, so for a low-income Bullitt resident who needs supervision but not nursing care, this license type can be the difference between staying in the county and moving.
Where else do Bullitt families look?
Families in Hillview and northern Bullitt often compare options in Okolona and southwest Louisville, a short drive up I-65 or Preston Highway. Okolona, Buechel and Hikes Point together have six assisted living licenses and nine nursing facilities; Shively and Valley Station add three more assisted living licenses. Families in Lebanon Junction may look south as well, outside the KIPDA region.
Bullitt shares KIPDA's Aging & Disability Resource Center ((502) 266-5571), Catholic Charities' ombudsman program and OIG's Northern Branch with Louisville.
What should Bullitt families ask on a tour?
Both Mount Washington assisted living campuses carry two licenses at one address, one for assisted living apartments and one for a secured dementia unit, so ask which license covers the apartment your parent would occupy and what happens if they later need the other side. Ask whether the community has residents who arrived through PACE or receive VA Aid and Attendance, how medications are handled on each license, and how far the nearest emergency room is; UofL South Hospital in Shepherdsville and the Louisville hospitals along I-65 are the usual destinations.
For the nursing facilities, bring the CMS numbers: overall rating, latest inspection date, deficiency count and staffing hours, all shown on our facility pages.
How does Bullitt County's senior population compare with its care supply?
Bullitt has about 16,162 residents 65 and older but only two assisted living campuses, one freestanding personal care home and two nursing facilities with CMS records, all within a few miles of each other in Mount Washington and Shepherdsville. By comparison, Shelby County, with about 9,643 residents 65 and older, has six assisted living licenses. That imbalance is why PACE and Louisville's southern suburbs matter so much to Bullitt families, and why getting on a waiting list or into a PACE assessment early pays off.
Lebanon Junction and southern Bullitt families face the longest drives to licensed care inside the KIPDA region, so they often weigh a Mount Washington campus against options in neighboring counties to the south, where different Area Agency on Aging and PACE arrangements apply. Ask any out-of-region provider which agencies serve its county before relying on a program you used in Bullitt.
