What is memory care in Kentucky?
Memory care in Kentucky is assisted living provided in a secured dementia care unit by a community holding an Assisted Living Community with Dementia Care (ALC-DC) license, with only dementia-trained staff assigned to residents on that unit.
It serves people living with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia who need supervision and structure, especially those at risk of wandering, but who do not need 24-hour skilled nursing.
What must a Kentucky memory care unit offer residents and families?
An ALC-DC must provide individualized activity plans, daily structured and unstructured activities, evaluation of behavioral symptoms, family support services at least every six months, flexible meal times, and secured outdoor access in units built after July 14, 2022.
It must also give families a copy of its dementia-care policies at move-in. Ask to see them during the tour, not after signing.
What does memory care cost in Louisville?
No one publishes a memory care median for Louisville or Kentucky because CareScout does not survey the category; expect quotes above the same community's assisted living rates and get them in writing at your parent's assessed level.
As with assisted living, Medicare and Kentucky Medicaid do not pay for memory care in an ALC-DC.
How many memory care units are licensed around Louisville?
Kentucky OIG's October 2026 directory lists 28 Assisted Living Community with Dementia Care (ALC-DC) licenses in the seven Louisville-area counties, 24 of them in Jefferson County, with 701 licensed units between them.
See them all on the memory care roster, or by Louisville neighborhood on the Louisville memory care page.
What should Louisville families ask a memory care community first?
Ask to see the ALC-DC license, the dementia-care policies the community must hand families at move-in, training records for staff on the secured unit, and how many trained staff are inside the unit overnight.
Also ask how the community handles exit-seeking, falls and behavioral symptoms, and what happens if your parent eventually needs more nursing care than the license allows.
